Luke S On my way home from seeing Isaiah and the Chosen Few absolutely kill it at Ronnie Scott's in London. I had to get myself some more of the live experience, and get myself something else to listen to other than I Am Beyond. Thank you, Mr Collier, for creating and playing music which hits so hard.

Angel Bat Dawid Isaiah Collier is a young composer, multi-instrumentalist, and incredible visionary. He is the future of Jazz music. At only 21 years old his album the "Unapologetic Negro" is so mature, advance, and powerful. Isaiah is also a great friend of mine and collaborator, in fact he asked me to write the liner notes for this. Favorite track: Closed Doors.

about

A return of a sound..from a not so far present future space. A return to the ancient wisdom teachings of ascended masters. A return of a musical empire built by a devastatingly powerful Activist, Saxophonist, Composer and Educator. A Black Emperor by the name of Isaiah Collier.

This ruler is unapologetic about this thing called Black. With his Trio he declares many are called but few are Chosen. This Chosen few Marcus Evans on drums and James Wenzel on upright bass, join Isaiah as he stands firmly, justly and with integrity on this Black American Music. A special sonic invitation into another land
Another liberating space....

Live@the Coda

Let the journey began...

Tri Steps

A metaphysical experiment in tritones and trying steps. Isaiah begins the anthem with a raspy and poignant sonic blast with his Tenor weapon. Bassists James Wenzel offers a cosmic ballad. Steady with intensity, as Marcus Evans sprinkles decadent waves of rhythmic taps.. light but driving.. subtle yet obvious.. holding the Tri Steps into a mighty delightful groove. Isaiah then changes the whole trajectory of the vibration by switching to Soprano Sax. He then begins to weave a lyrical story so fascinatingly advanced.. working each change with precision and ease...cleansing the consciousness...I'm elevated.

Walk with Me Lord

After you try a few steps now ya walkin....but slow down you may need a little help. Collier starts this ancient spiritual with a wail. A voice crying in the wilderness. Asking the deity to come forth and walk with us. With his soprano Isaiah explores ancient Moorish scales...in cosmological keys...ahh as you can see this Emperor is a sonic scientist...digging deeply into his biological DNA...wailing like his great ancestors...Blow Emperor... Blow!!

Mr. Night

The spirituals then lead us Into Mr. Night. Isaiah blasts in with the Tenor...a strong gust of power over a lush blues. Held securely and firmly by the Chosen Few. Mr. Night tells a story of thunderous hamhocks in yo cornflakes, rings around yo tub, 9 cans of shaving powder..have yo mind all funked up. You can tell this man has studied the traditional masters. Like Jug, Cannonball, and Trane...he delivers epic strong lines with riveting stories, tales and fables. Just like the men of the night talkin shit and sounded so good doing it!

Close Door

This somber tale of old. Beginning with Wenzel laying down a simple pounding monotonous drive. Marcus Evans scooping up the left overs smoothing the sound daringly and humbly... and then a sweet serene beautiful lament wafts through. Sounds of enslaved people who see a door shut. Knowing they will never return to their home. Isaiah pierces through the quiet dirge. Close door is a lament like no other. Where did such a Young Emperor learn such sorrow, and then tenderly know how to wrap it in a hopeful hopelessness with the fervent and despairing cry of the soprano sax? Isaiah takes our emotions on a journey through healing. Helping us find another way home. The thematic phrase is the tale of a man in bondage, in disbelief that such an existence would be. A mighty rushing wind of exuberant ecstatic hollerin schreech of terror..into hellahhhhhhh

Retrograde Amian

What if we could go back...we rewind we retrograde using a familar vehicle. Isaiah takes Tranes gorgeous ballad Naima and plays it in retorgade.Expanding the lines morphing the phrases to create a serenity. Isaiah exudes a whimiscal and respectfully warm conversation with the Chosen Few delivering a velvety buttery landscape. Sometimes spliting into splenid multiphonic explosions!

Mali

The mystical ponderings contines. In Mali Emperor Collier introduces a cryptic cosmic scale unlocking into a thematically rich melody. Multi-colored vibrant textures simmer into a delicious dish of flavorful sonic delights. The trio compress the sound and let James simmer the cryptex..Evans ponders each move holding the sacred intensity. Isaiah explodes back in with the soprano and sends a beautiful praise to the heavens..joy,wonder and freedom..free music...Jam on Sire!

5874 WE WANT JUSTICE RIGHT NOW

The march begins..no warm up just there. Collier delivers an instant message. This emperor aint taken no shit! Hes giving orders and you better listen to evety note. Each tone demanding sonic retribution..telling the troops march foward..the Chosen Few obey with precisionn. Marcus Evans leads a stealthily subdued solo through chocolate soul terrains. The Emperor joins his army and leads them through "slominskyesk" designs. Marching into the familar sweet Cousin Mary...she loudly proclaims We want Justice Now!

Ode to JD

Ode to JD is a triumphant victory. An exuberant enchanting theme. Looped and looped into several ecstatic waves. The Emperor is demanding that the Chosen Few keep up with the twists and turns of his magical epic revelries. They readily and gladly comply and match his expressivly fast changes sequences and vibrations.

So there you have it a journey into the mystical world of a sound scientist gathering tribal hypnotic instructions from the ancient pool of Blackness..
negrotudiously negrofied negrosity...and hes absolutely unapologetic about every bit of it!
